This programme builds a strong foundation in molecular and cellular biology, genetics, ecology and evolution, and then develops specialised zoological themes such as animal physiology, behaviour, population biology and conservation. Early years cover core topics and research skills, including laboratory techniques, statistical analysis and scientific communication. In later years you choose optional modules that may include behavioural ecology, vertebrate and invertebrate biology, parasitology, animal physiology, wildlife management, and ecological survey methods.
Practical experience is integral: you will take part in laboratory classes, data analysis workshops and regular fieldwork that uses local habitats and reserves. The degree culminates in an independent research project or dissertation, supervised by academic staff, which develops experimental design, field or lab methods, and data interpretation. Students can also take modules in related areas such as conservation biology, taxonomy, and environmental science to broaden their skillset.
Applicants are expected to have strong science qualifications, typically including Biology at A-level or an equivalent qualification. Other science A-levels or equivalents (for example Chemistry, Mathematics or Environmental Science) are highly recommended. Applicants without Biology may be considered if they can demonstrate relevant experience or equivalent learning in a biological subject.
Graduates go on to a wide range of careers in areas such as ecological consultancy, wildlife and habitat management, conservation charities and NGOs, zoological collections, and environmental regulation.
