What you'll study

This programme explores the development, learning and well‑being of children from birth to eight years, combining theoretical study with substantial practice. Core topics include child development across the early years, play and the curriculum, safeguarding and welfare, inclusive practice, family and community partnerships, and contemporary policy and legislation affecting early childhood.

• Child development and psychology — cognitive, social and emotional development theories and observation methods.
• Play, learning and curriculum — how play underpins learning and approaches to planning rich early years environments.
• Safeguarding and welfare — statutory duties, safe recruitment, recognising and responding to concerns.
• Inclusive practice and special educational needs — strategies to support diverse learners and work collaboratively with parents and specialists.
• Policy, leadership and management — early years policy, service provision, leadership and quality improvement, including preparation for higher‑level practitioner roles.
• Research and professional inquiry — research methods, critical reflection and a final-year project or placement‑based dissertation.
• Practice placements — supervised placements in nurseries, preschool settings, childminding networks or community services to apply learning in real contexts.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements typically reflect standard undergraduate admission criteria, including a relevant combination of A‑levels, BTEC qualifications or equivalent qualifications and UCAS tariff points. Applicants are expected to have passes in GCSE English and Maths at an appropriate level (or recognised equivalents). Admissions will consider personal statements, references and evidence of relevant experience with children.

Successful applicants must be willing to undertake an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and meet any health and immunisation checks required by placement providers. Some routes may require an interview or an assessment day to explore suitability for professional practice.

Career prospects

Graduates move into a wide range of roles in the early years and children’s sector. The EYPS pathway is designed to prepare students for higher‑level practitioner roles and leadership within early years settings.

• Early years practitioner and room leader in nurseries and pre‑schools
• Nursery manager or deputy manager following further experience or management training
• Family support worker, community outreach roles and children's centre staff
• Support roles in special educational needs and inclusion services
• Progression to postgraduate training such as Qualified Teacher Status (Early Years) or master’s level qualifications in childhood studies, leadership or research
