What you'll study

The programme provides a combination of core environmental science topics and optional specialist modules. In the early years you will study foundational subjects such as ecology, environmental chemistry, physical geography and statistics, while developing practical laboratory and fieldwork skills. Typical modules include environmental monitoring and sampling techniques, pollution and remediation, freshwater and marine ecosystems, soils and land-use, climate change science, GIS and remote sensing, environmental impact assessment, and environmental policy and law.

The BSc route is a three-year honours degree focused on taught modules and a research-led dissertation or project in the final year. The MSci is an integrated four-year honours programme that includes advanced honours-level modules, extended independent research or a major research project, and training in research methods and scientific communication. Fieldwork is embedded across the programme, with opportunities for river, coastal and estuarine studies, long-term monitoring, and campus-based laboratory practicals.

Entry requirements

Typical entry requirements include A levels, Scottish Highers, BTEC National Diplomas, or the International Baccalaureate. Successful applicants usually present science-based A levels such as Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Geography, or Mathematics. Applicants with BTEC or other vocational qualifications should have a strong science component and may be asked to demonstrate practical or laboratory experience.

UCAS tariff points or equivalent qualifications are considered alongside personal statements and references. Mature applicants and those with relevant work experience are encouraged to apply; admissions tutors will assess non-traditional qualifications on an individual basis. International applicants must meet English language requirements.
