What you'll study

The programme starts with a foundation year that develops essential study skills and subject knowledge to prepare you for honours-level study. Foundation modules typically cover mathematics and statistics for science, introductory biology and chemistry, fundamentals of earth and environmental science, basic fieldwork and laboratory techniques, and academic skills such as scientific writing and information handling.

On successful completion of the foundation year you progress into the three-year BSc programme, where you'll study interdisciplinary modules that span physical and biological aspects of the environment together with human dimensions. Core topics include ecology and biodiversity, environmental chemistry and pollution, soil science, hydrology and water quality, environmental monitoring and instrumentation, and environmental data analysis including GIS and remote sensing. You will also study environmental policy, management and sustainability, and there are options to take modules in climate change, environmental modelling, conservation practice and environmental law.

Practical learning is an important element: the programme includes laboratory classes, computing sessions (GIS and statistical software), and fieldwork—ranging from day trips to residential field courses—so you gain hands-on experience in sampling, surveying and data collection. In the final year you complete an independent research project or dissertation, allowing you to apply your skills to a specific environmental question under academic supervision.

Entry requirements

The foundation year route is designed for applicants who do not yet meet direct-entry requirements for an undergraduate BSc. Typical successful applicants will have a mix of GCSEs (including English and mathematics) or equivalent qualifications; applicants with level 3 qualifications such as BTEC Nationals, Access to Higher Education diplomas, or relevant work experience may also be considered. Applicants should demonstrate an aptitude for science-based study and an interest in environmental issues.

Progression to the main BSc course normally requires satisfactory completion of the foundation year with the required academic profile. For direct entry to later stages, the programme expects science-based A-levels or equivalent qualifications (for example in biology, chemistry, geography, mathematics or environmental science), but offers routes for applicants with alternative backgrounds where appropriate. International applicants must meet the university's English language requirements and provide recognised qualifications comparable to domestic entry standards.
