What you'll study

This integrated master's combines core physical geography topics with applied environmental science and quantitative methods. Early years build foundational knowledge in geomorphology, climatology, hydrology, soils and ecology, together with statistics and GIS. Fieldwork and laboratory practice are embedded throughout to develop observational skills, sampling techniques and experimental design.

In later years you study advanced modules such as fluvial and coastal systems, landscape evolution, palaeoenvironmental change, environmental hazards and climate impacts, alongside specialist training in remote sensing, spatial analysis and environmental modelling. The programme culminates in a substantial research project or dissertation at master's level, where you plan and execute an independent investigation under academic supervision.

The placement year provides a full-time professional experience in industry, government, consultancy, conservation or research organisations. Placements are structured to link academic learning with real-world tasks—examples include environmental impact assessment, catchment management, GIS analysis for planning, or data-driven monitoring of ecosystems.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to have a strong background in science or geography-related subjects. Typical applicants hold qualifications in geography, environmental science, biology, chemistry, physics or mathematics at a high standard. The programme accepts a range of UK and international school qualifications; UK applicants normally apply through UCAS.

Specific offers may vary by year and applicant profile; the department also considers mature students and those with relevant work experience. All candidates whose first language is not English will need to demonstrate English language proficiency at the level required by the University.

Students with suitable A-levels, BTEC qualifications, International Baccalaureate or equivalent are encouraged to apply. Admissions decisions take into account academic performance, references and, where relevant, personal statements and interview materials.
