What you'll study

This honours degree integrates pure and applied mathematics with statistical theory and business‑facing analytical techniques. In early years you will build fundamentals such as calculus, linear algebra, discrete mathematics, probability and introductory statistics. You will also develop programming and computational skills commonly used in data work, for example in Python and statistical software environments.

As you progress to intermediate and final years, typical topics include statistical inference, regression and multivariate analysis, time series and forecasting, stochastic processes, optimisation and operations research, and numerical methods. Business analysis elements cover data management, data visualisation, business intelligence concepts, decision analysis, and modules that address the application of quantitative methods to finance, marketing and operations.

Teaching is delivered through lectures, seminars and practical computing classes, and assessment mixes exams, coursework and project work. Final‑year students usually complete a substantial individual or small‑team project that applies mathematical and statistical tools to a business or research question. There are opportunities for an industrial placement or study abroad, enabling hands‑on experience with employers in the public and private sectors.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a strong background in mathematics from their secondary or further education. Typical candidates will present A‑level Mathematics (or equivalent) or high performance in Scottish Highers and Advanced Highers including mathematics. Some prior familiarity with statistics or computing is advantageous but not always essential.

International qualifications and access routes are welcomed; applicants whose first language is not English will normally need to demonstrate English language proficiency to the University’s standard.
