What you'll study

The program combines advanced clinical coursework with applied practice to develop high-level assessment, decision-making and management skills. Typical topics include advanced health assessment and physical examination, advanced pharmacology and therapeutics, complex care management, chronic and long-term conditions, mental health nursing, and contemporary issues in primary and community care.

Research and evidence-based practice are core components: students study research methods and critical appraisal to support practice improvement and service innovation. Leadership, professional practice and healthcare systems content prepares graduates to work in multidisciplinary teams, lead quality and safety initiatives, and contribute to policy and service development.

Study is largely coursework-based with substantial clinical practice requirements. Clinical placements or simulated-practice units give students applied experience in a range of settings such as acute hospitals, community and primary care, mental health services and aged-care facilities. Elective or specialised units may allow focus on areas such as perioperative nursing, paediatrics, indigenous health, or nurse-led chronic disease management.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally required to hold current registration as a nurse with the relevant national registration body (for example, AHPRA for nurses practising in Australia) or an equivalent international qualification. Academic entry typically includes a recognised undergraduate degree in nursing or equivalent professional qualification.

Other standard requirements include evidence of recent clinical experience, a satisfactory academic record (such as a bachelor's degree in nursing or equivalent), and demonstration of English language proficiency through accepted tests if English is not the applicant's first language. Successful applicants must meet any professional clearance requirements for clinical placements, which may include criminal record checks, immunisation status and other health screening.

Typical career paths include clinical nurse specialist, advanced practice nurse, nurse unit manager or coordinator, clinical educator, and roles in community health, aged care or mental health services.
