What you'll study

The MSN curriculum builds advanced clinical knowledge, leadership capabilities and research skills. Core study areas typically include advanced pathophysiology, advanced pharmacology, advanced health assessment, and population health. Students also study evidence-based practice and research methods, healthcare policy and ethics, quality and safety in healthcare, healthcare informatics, and organisational leadership.

After completing core courses, students follow a specialist pathway:

• Nursing Administration: courses in strategic leadership, financial management for healthcare, human resources and workforce planning, change management, quality improvement and regulatory compliance, often culminating in a practicum or leadership project focused on organisational outcomes.
• Nursing Research: emphasis on research design and methods, statistics for health sciences, implementation science, grant writing and dissemination, and a research capstone or thesis that prepares graduates to contribute to scholarly and practice-based evidence.
• Clinical Nursing: advanced clinical decision-making, care coordination, clinical practicum experience in specialised settings, and coursework on chronic disease management and advanced patient assessment to prepare nurses for senior clinical roles (note: nurse practitioner certification requires a separate NP programme).

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to be licensed Registered Nurses (RN) in the jurisdiction where practicum hours will be completed. Typical entry requirements include:

• A baccalaureate degree in nursing (BSN) or an approved bridge pathway from an ADN coupled with relevant coursework; some applicants may be considered with an associate degree plus additional prerequisites.
• Current, unencumbered RN licence.
• Official academic transcripts demonstrating satisfactory academic performance at the undergraduate level; a minimum cumulative GPA is commonly required (check the university for the specific threshold).
• Recommended clinical experience as a practising nurse; certain pathways may specify a minimum number of clinical hours or years of practice.
• Supporting documents such as a professional résumé or CV, a personal statement or goals essay, and in some cases references or letters of recommendation.
• Compliance with health and background clearance requirements for practicum placements, and evidence of required immunisations or health screenings. International applicants may need to demonstrate English language proficiency through an approved test if applicable.

• Nurse manager, director of nursing or other leadership and administrative positions responsible for operations, staffing and budgeting.
