What you'll study

The programme builds a foundation in core biological and chemical sciences before moving into specialised biomedical topics. Early-year study typically covers cell and molecular biology, human physiology and anatomy, biochemistry, genetics, microbiology and introductory pharmacology, alongside essential quantitative skills such as statistics and research methods.

In later years students choose from more specialised modules in areas such as immunology, neuroscience, pathology, molecular medicine, infectious disease, toxicology and cancer biology. Practical laboratory classes, data analysis and experimental design are a strong component throughout the degree, and students have opportunities for a supervised research project or honours-style dissertation if they progress to the honours year or take research electives.

Teaching is a mix of lectures, small-group tutorials, laboratory practicals and research-led seminars. Assessment commonly includes written exams, lab reports, practical assessments and research assignments.

Entry requirements

• Academic qualifications: Applicants must meet the University of Otago's general undergraduate entrance requirements. Competitive applicants have strong secondary school achievement in science subjects.
• Preferred subjects: Prior study in biology and chemistry is recommended; mathematics or statistics and physics are also advantageous.
• International applicants: Equivalent international secondary school qualifications (such as IB or recognised national systems) are acceptable; English language proficiency is required for applicants whose first language is not English.
• Mature or alternative entry: Applicants without direct secondary-school entry may be considered on the basis of tertiary study or relevant work experience; selection criteria and pathways are provided by the University.

The degree also provides a typical pathway into postgraduate study (MSc, PhD) and professional programmes such as medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy or other allied health professions, subject to the entry requirements of those programmes.
