What you'll study

The BSc(Hons) combines advanced taught papers with a substantial supervised research project (honours thesis) in a chosen science discipline. You will take specialised, senior-level courses that build on 300-level content in your major subject—typical areas include biological sciences, chemistry, biochemistry, physics, geology, mathematics and statistics, psychology, computer science and environmental science.

• Advanced coursework: topical seminars and advanced lectures covering current theory, methods and applications in your field (for example advanced molecular biology, inorganic synthesis, condensed-matter physics, or statistical modelling).
• Research methods and techniques: training in experimental design, laboratory practice, field methods, quantitative analysis, programming or computational techniques relevant to your discipline.
• Honours thesis: an independent research project carried out under the guidance of an academic supervisor; this develops skills in literature review, hypothesis testing, data collection and scientific writing.
• Skills development: scientific communication, critical analysis, ethics and research integrity, and, where relevant, professional practice modules (e.g. bioinformatics, GIS, instrumentation).

Entry requirements

Applicants normally need to have completed a Bachelor of Science (or equivalent) with appropriate preparation in the intended honours subject. Entry is competitive and typically requires a strong academic record—candidates should have achieved a high level of performance in 300-level papers in their major area.

Admission often depends on available supervision and laboratory resources; prospective students are encouraged to discuss proposed projects with potential supervisors and to ensure they meet any subject-specific prerequisites. International applicants must also meet the University’s general English-language requirements.

The BSc(Hons) prepares graduates for a range of pathways. Many use honours as a stepping stone to postgraduate research (Master’s by research or PhD). Others move directly into professional roles that value advanced technical and analytical skills.
