What you'll study

This programme combines management theory with health-sector practice. You study core topics such as health systems and policy, health economics and finance, leadership and organisational behaviour, and quality improvement. Teaching emphasises applied skills—project planning, data-informed decision-making and stakeholder engagement—so you can translate theory into improvements in clinical and community services.

• Health systems and policy: analysis of health delivery models, policy development and the regulatory environment.
• Health economics and finance: budgeting, financial reporting, resource allocation and cost-effectiveness in health settings.
• Leadership and management: strategic planning, human resource management, change management and team leadership.
• Quality improvement and governance: methods for clinical governance, patient safety, performance measurement and service improvement.
• Health law, ethics and Māori and Pacific health: legal and ethical frameworks and the importance of culturally responsive approaches in Aotearoa New Zealand.
• Health informatics and data use: using health information systems and routine data for service planning and evaluation.
• Applied project or capstone: an applied assignment or project that integrates learning with a workplace problem or policy issue.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally required to hold a recognised bachelors degree or equivalent qualification. The programme welcomes applicants from clinical backgrounds (nursing, allied health, medicine) and from non-clinical disciplines who have relevant work experience in health, social services or public policy. Selection is based on academic record and professional experience; some applicants may be asked to provide a CV and referee statements. International applicants must meet the Universitys English language requirements and demonstrate qualifications comparable to New Zealands entry standards.
