What you'll study

The programme combines advanced studio work with graduate-level theory and production practice. Core topics typically include acting technique, voice and movement, scene study, directing workshop, play analysis, dramaturgy and theatre history. Students also study technical areas such as scenic design, lighting, costume and stagecraft, and take courses in research methods, pedagogy and theatre management.

Programme structure is built around a mix of seminars, conservatory-style studios and hands-on production assignments. Graduate students participate in department theatrical seasons in leading roles both onstage and behind the scenes, and they complete a culminating project that may take the form of a directed production, a design project, a research thesis or a practicum portfolio, depending on their focus and faculty supervision.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. A degree in theatre or a closely related field is preferred, but applicants with relevant professional experience are considered. Typical requirements include:

• Official transcripts demonstrating satisfactory academic standing (graduate GPA expectations vary by programme).
• A statement of purpose outlining artistic goals, proposed area of emphasis and reasons for pursuing graduate study.
• Letters of recommendation (usually two or three) from academic or professional referees.
• A résumé or curriculum vitae detailing performance, production or teaching experience.
• A creative supplement: performance applicants are normally required to submit a live or recorded audition; designers and technicians submit a portfolio of recent work; applicants focused on scholarship submit a writing sample.
• Some applicants may be invited to an interview with faculty as part of the selection process.

Common pathways include professional acting and voice work, stage directing, stage management, technical and scenic design, lighting and costume design, and dramaturgy.
