What you'll study

The programme combines core modules in pedagogy and educational research with specialist options in curriculum, assessment and inclusive practice. Typical taught units cover topics such as: curriculum design and subject-specific pedagogy; assessment for learning and formative feedback; classroom management and behaviour strategies; inclusive education and special educational needs; and contemporary policy and leadership issues in schools.

All students study a module in research methods, preparing them to complete a sustained piece of independent research (dissertation or applied project) on a classroom or school-based question. Depending on the route you choose, there are also practical components focused on professional practice: these may include school-based placements, micro-teaching, lesson observation and reflective professional development activities.

Programme structure is modular and flexible, typically combining a set of compulsory core modules, a choice of specialist option modules, and a final research project. Part-time study and some distance-learning elements may be available to fit around professional commitments.

Entry requirements

Applicants normally need a UK honours degree (2:2 or above) or an international equivalent. Relevant prior experience in education, such as teaching, classroom support, or youth work, is highly desirable and may be required for certain routes. For pathways that prepare candidates for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or include assessed school placements, applicants must meet statutory requirements such as satisfactory DBS (or equivalent) clearance, references from professional supervisors, and evidence of literacy and numeracy competence.

International applicants should hold an equivalent degree and demonstrate English language proficiency; the programme team will advise on acceptable test scores and any additional English requirements. Applicants are usually asked to submit a personal statement outlining their motivation for the programme and may be invited to interview.
