What you'll study

The programme combines core technical subjects with options that allow you to tailor learning to crop production, livestock systems, soil science, sustainable farming or farm business management. You will study advanced topics in plant physiology, crop protection and integrated pest management; soil science and nutrient management; farm systems analysis; and the economics and policy contexts that shape agricultural decision-making.

• Core taught modules typically cover experimental design and statistics for agricultural research, sustainable crop and livestock production, and farm business management.
• Optional modules commonly include precision agriculture and data analytics, plant protection and pathology, pasture and forage management, soil health and conservation, and agri-environmental policy.
• The programme culminates with an independent research project or dissertation based on original research carried out under academic supervision, often using on-campus experimental farms or laboratory facilities.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good undergraduate degree (equivalent to a UK second-class honours, upper division / 2:1) in agriculture, plant/animal/soil sciences, environmental science or a closely related discipline. Candidates with a lower undergraduate degree plus relevant professional experience in the agricultural sector may also be considered. You should demonstrate a background in biological or physical sciences and familiarity with basic quantitative methods.

International applicants whose first language is not English will need to meet the University's English language requirements; a commonly accepted profile is an overall IELTS score with a minimum in each component, though acceptable qualifications and scores vary so check the University's guidance for current expectations.
