What you'll study

This master's combines core modules on strategic theory and contemporary security challenges with methodological training and a substantial research project. Typical taught topics include the history and theory of strategy, grand strategy and geopolitics, military doctrine and force structure, intelligence and information operations, deterrence and coercion, irregular warfare and counterinsurgency, and the politics of arms control and non-proliferation.

Teaching methods normally include lectures, seminars, case studies and simulation exercises. You will also study research methods for security and international affairs, covering qualitative and quantitative techniques, critical approaches to sources, and policy-oriented analysis. The programme culminates in a dissertation or extended research project supervised by an academic specialist, allowing you to pursue a focused investigation of a strategic issue or region.

• Optional modules: intelligence and security; conflict and peacebuilding; cyber security and information warfare; regional security (e.g. Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Europe); defence technology and procurement policy.
• Assessment: a mix of essays, policy briefs, presentations, simulated wargames or crisis exercises, and a dissertation.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good undergraduate degree in a relevant subject such as international relations, politics, history, military studies, law, economics or another social science. Candidates with professional experience in defence, security, government or non-governmental organisations may also be considered, particularly where their experience demonstrates the ability to undertake postgraduate study.

International applicants must meet the University’s English language requirements; typically this is demonstrated by an internationally recognised academic English test or an approved equivalent qualification. You will be assessed on the strength of your academic transcripts, personal statement, and where requested, references or an interview.

Graduates go on to careers in a range of public, private and third-sector roles. Common destinations include national defence and armed forces, government ministries and diplomatic services, intelligence and security agencies, think tanks and policy institutes, international organisations, and non-governmental organisations focusing on conflict, security and development. Graduates are also well placed for roles in risk and security consultancy, defence industry analysis, media and commentary on security issues, and for further academic research at MPhil/PhD level.
