What you'll study

The programme combines studio-based practice, applied research methods and strategic frameworks to explore how design can create impactful innovation. Core themes include user-centred design and ethnography, rapid prototyping and materials, service and systems design, design management and innovation strategy, and communication for design leadership.

• Design research methods and user insight — qualitative research, co-design and translating insight into briefs.
• Prototyping and making — hands-on development of physical and digital prototypes, iterative testing and material exploration.
• Service and systems design — mapping complex systems, service blueprinting and designing end-to-end experiences.
• Design management and innovation strategy — business models, project leadership, stakeholder engagement and delivering design outcomes at scale.
• Collaborative studio and live projects — multidisciplinary team projects with real-world briefs from industry or community partners.
• Major project or dissertation — an independent, practice-led project that synthesises research, prototyping and strategic thinking to deliver a tangible design outcome.

Structure

Typically delivered through a mix of seminars, studio sessions, workshops and project supervision, assessment is by portfolio, project reports, presentations and the final major project. The programme is available full-time and may be offered with flexible study modes; contact the university for current delivery options.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good undergraduate degree in design, product design, engineering, architecture, fine art, business or another relevant discipline. Applicants with a lower class of degree and substantial professional experience or a strong portfolio of relevant work may also be considered.

• Portfolio — a curated selection of project work demonstrating process, outcomes and your role in projects is normally required.
• Experience — professional experience in design, innovation or related fields is valued and can support an application.
• English language — international applicants must meet Loughborough University’s standard English language requirements; evidence of proficiency will be required where applicable.

Career prospects

Graduates go on to roles that bridge design, business and technology. Typical career paths include product designer, service designer, UX/interaction designer, design strategist, innovation consultant, design manager or roles within R&D and product development teams. Alumni also progress to start-ups, consultancy, in-house design teams across manufacturing and services, or to further academic research at doctoral level.
