What you'll study

The programme combines core training in policy analysis and research methods with optional modules that allow you to specialise in areas such as social policy, health policy, environmental policy or economic regulation. Core topics typically include policy analysis and evaluation, quantitative and qualitative research methods, economics for public policy, and public management and governance. Teaching is delivered through lectures, seminars, workshops and case-based learning, and the degree culminates in an independent dissertation or applied research project that requires you to investigate a real policy problem.

• Policy analysis and evaluation – frameworks and tools for assessing policy design, implementation and impact.
• Research methods – advanced quantitative methods (statistics, econometrics) and qualitative methods (interviewing, thematic analysis, case studies).
• Economics for public policy – market failures, public goods, cost–benefit analysis and regulatory approaches.
• Public management and governance – institutional analysis, leadership, accountability and intergovernmental relations.
• Optional/specialist modules – topics such as health policy, education policy, environmental policy, social policy and policy innovation.
• Dissertation or applied project – an extended piece of independent research or an applied consultancy-style project with a policy partner.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a competitive undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline such as politics, social sciences, economics, public administration or a related area. A UK upper second-class (2:1) honours degree or an international equivalent is typically required; applicants with relevant professional experience and a lower classification may also be considered. You will also need to demonstrate proficiency in English if your first language is not English, usually through an approved test at the programme's required level. A personal statement outlining your interest in public policy and any relevant experience is required, and academic or professional references are normally requested.
