What you'll study

This programme combines core international relations theory with specialist topics in global governance, security, political economy and regional politics. Teaching balances lectures, seminars and small-group workshops with assessed essays, policy briefings and a final-year independent research project.

• Core theory and methods: introduction to international relations theory, research methods and political analysis.
• Global governance and institutions: the UN, EU, international law, transnational organisations and multilateral cooperation.
• Security and conflict studies: war and peace, terrorism, human security, conflict resolution and peacebuilding.
• International political economy: trade, finance, development policy and the politics of globalisation.
• Regional specialisms: politics of regions such as Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa, including contemporary case studies.
• Policy and practice: diplomacy, foreign policy analysis, human rights, migration and humanitarianism.
• Research project: a supervised dissertation or major project in the final year allowing focused research on a topic of your choice.
• Optional modules and experiential learning: language modules, work placements, internships or a year abroad are often available to broaden practical experience and employability.

Entry requirements

Loughborough looks for applicants with strong academic achievement from a recognised secondary or post-secondary qualification. Typical applicants will present A-levels, an International Baccalaureate diploma or equivalent qualifications, with relevant subjects such as politics, history, economics, sociology or languages preferred but not always required. Mature applicants and those with vocational qualifications or an Access to Higher Education Diploma are considered.

Applicants are normally expected to demonstrate competence in English; additional requirements for literacy and numeracy may apply. Admissions decisions take into account personal statements and references, and shortlisted candidates may be interviewed or asked to submit written work.
