What you'll study

This programme combines core International Relations theory with practical study of contemporary global issues. In early years you typically encounter modules covering International Relations theory, introduction to global politics, and research methods. Later stages offer options in foreign policy analysis, global security and conflict, international political economy, global governance and human rights. Students undertake an independent research project or dissertation in their final year and can choose specialist units such as regional politics (e.g. Europe, Middle East, Asia), migration and refugee studies, development policy, environmental politics, and diplomacy.

Teaching is delivered through lectures, seminars, case-study workshops and supervised research. Assessment commonly includes essays, policy briefings, presentations, timed exams and the final dissertation or project. There are opportunities to take language modules, participate in guest-lectures and practitioner-led sessions, and to pursue short-term study abroad or work placement experiences where available.

Entry requirements

Entry is for applicants with an appropriate mix of qualifications from A-levels, BTECs, the International Baccalaureate or recognised international equivalents. Successful applicants normally demonstrate achievement in relevant subjects and the academic potential to study a social science degree. Admissions decisions also take account of the personal statement and references, and all candidates may need to meet standard English language requirements if English is not their first language.

Typical applicants will have evidence of analytical and written skills, an interest in contemporary global affairs, and the ability to engage in independent study and research. If you have non-traditional qualifications, relevant work or voluntary experience in international or community organisations can strengthen an application.

Graduates of International Relations develop transferable skills valued across the public, private and third sectors. Career destinations commonly include the civil service and diplomacy, international organisations and NGOs, policy and advocacy roles, journalism and media, think-tanks and research institutes, and international business and consulting. Graduates also progress to specialist postgraduate study in areas such as international relations, development studies, security studies or law.

The degree emphasises research, critical analysis, written and oral communication, and quantitative and qualitative methods—all useful in graduate recruitment schemes, policy analysis posts, and roles requiring cross-cultural awareness and political judgement.
