What you'll study

The MSci in Natural Sciences combines core scientific principles with options that let you build a bespoke pathway across life, physical and earth sciences and quantitative methods. In early years you take foundation modules covering key concepts in chemistry, physics, biology, earth and environmental science, and mathematics for scientists. Practical laboratory work, fieldwork and computing are embedded throughout to develop experimental technique and data analysis.

In later years you choose specialist modules to deepen knowledge in areas such as molecular and cellular biology, organic and physical chemistry, condensed matter and materials, geoscience and climate, mathematical modelling, and computational methods. The final year is research-focused and typically includes an extended research project or dissertation supervised by academic staff, advanced specialist modules and training in research methods, scientific communication and professional skills.

Entry requirements

Entry is competitive and applicants are expected to demonstrate a strong background in science and mathematics. Typical applicants will hold A-levels (or equivalent) including two or three sciences, with mathematics highly recommended; other acceptable qualifications include the International Baccalaureate, Scottish Highers/Advanced Highers and recognised international equivalents. Mature students and those with relevant vocational qualifications or substantial scientific experience are considered.

Successful candidates should show evidence of scientific curiosity, practical laboratory experience where possible, and the ability to cope with quantitative reasoning and written communication. Admissions may also take into account references, personal statements and, where applicable, interview performance.

Graduates of the Natural Sciences MSci have a wide range of career pathways because of the degree's multidisciplinary and research-led nature. Common destinations include:
