What you'll study

The BEng Civil Engineering is structured to build a solid foundation in mathematics and engineering principles before progressing to specialist civil engineering topics and design practice. In early stages you study core subjects such as calculus and linear algebra, mechanics of materials, engineering surveying, materials science, computing for engineers and introductory structural analysis.

In later years the programme covers subjects including structural design and analysis, geotechnical engineering, hydraulics and water resources, transport engineering, environmental and sustainable engineering, construction management and professional practice. Teaching combines lectures, tutorials, laboratory classes, CAD and finite-element modelling, site visits and group design projects.

Assessment methods include written examinations, coursework and design assignments, laboratory reports, group project work and an individual or team design project. There are also opportunities for optional modules that reflect contemporary themes such as sustainable infrastructure, advanced structural materials, earthquake engineering and digital construction.

The programme is delivered over three years full-time, with options to take a year in industry (placement) or a year abroad to broaden professional experience and employability.

Entry requirements

Entry is competitive and applicants are expected to demonstrate strong attainment in mathematics plus at least one science or technology subject at A level (or equivalent). Typical applicants will have a strong background in maths and physics, and are expected to show evidence of problem‑solving ability and practical interest in engineering.

Acceptable qualifications include A levels, Scottish Highers/Advanced Highers, BTEC (relevant subjects), International Baccalaureate and recognised access routes for mature students. Applicants whose first language is not English will need to meet the university's English language requirements.
