What you'll study

The Honours year builds on undergraduate study by combining advanced coursework with a substantial supervised research project (honours dissertation). You will study specialised topics that extend core theories, methods and debates from your major subject area. Typical areas of study available within a Bachelor of Arts Honours include cultural studies, sociology, history, philosophy, political science, media and communication, languages and literature, and interdisciplinary cultural or creative programmes.

Study components usually include:

• Advanced seminars that focus on current research, theory and interpretation in your chosen field.
• Research methods training—qualitative and/or quantitative approaches, archival methods, critical theory, or discipline‑specific techniques.
• Honours dissertation: an independent, supervisor‑supported research project that develops a sustained argument and demonstrates competence in research design, literature review and scholarly writing.
• Option papers allowing you to pursue complementary topics such as digital humanities, indigenous studies, public policy, curatorship, or communication practice depending on your major.

Entry requirements

Entry is normally open to students who have completed a Bachelor of Arts (or equivalent) with a relevant major and who meet Massey University’s honours eligibility criteria. Applicants are expected to demonstrate strong academic performance in their undergraduate major and the ability to undertake independent research. You will usually need to submit academic transcripts and a brief research proposal or statement of intent, and in some cases secure a prospective supervisor.
