What you'll study

The Bachelor of Health Science combines core health science knowledge with applied study in public and community health. Early study typically covers human biology, anatomy and physiology, introduction to epidemiology, and foundations of health and society. As you progress you choose papers from areas such as health promotion and education, health policy and management, research methods and biostatistics, mental health, ageing and disability studies, and indigenous (Māori and Pasifika) health.

The programme emphasises both scientific and social perspectives on health: modules teach biological mechanisms of disease alongside population-level approaches, behavioural change theory, cultural competence and ethics. You will also undertake project work and research-focused papers that develop skills in study design, data interpretation and health communication. Depending on course options and campus, there are opportunities for applied learning through community projects, workplace-based experiences and interdisciplinary collaborations with other health programmes.

Entry requirements

Admission to the Bachelor of Health Science normally requires a recognised secondary school qualification equivalent to New Zealand University Entrance or relevant tertiary qualifications. Applicants are assessed on their academic record and suitability for undergraduate study. Mature applicants with relevant work or volunteer experience in health or community services may be considered.
