What you'll study

The programme blends core ideas and methods from political science, international relations (IR) and economics across a staged honours programme. In early years you build foundations in economic theory and quantitive methods alongside introductions to political thought, comparative politics and IR. Later years deepen those skills with modules on public policy, international political economy, security studies, econometrics and research methods, culminating in a substantial honours dissertation or major project.

• Core economics topics: principles of microeconomics and macroeconomics, applied macroeconomics, public economics, game theory elements and econometrics/quantitative methods for economic analysis.
• Core politics and IR topics: political theory and ideologies, comparative government, institutions and constitutions, international relations theory, global governance and security studies.

• Advanced options: international political economy, development and globalisation, diplomacy and foreign policy, conflict and security, regulatory economics, and a supervised honours dissertation or project drawing on interdisciplinary research.

Entry requirements

The programme typically seeks applicants with a good set of school qualifications and evidence of ability in quantitative reasoning and written analysis. Typical offers are competitive and based on A-levels, Scottish Highers/Advanced Highers, or international equivalents; accepted subjects often include economics, mathematics, history, politics or social sciences.

Applicants should demonstrate strong communication skills through a personal statement and references. International students will need to meet English language requirements.
