FieldDigital Media And Sociology

This undergraduate programme combines sociological theory and research with practical study of digital media, preparing students to understand how digital technologies shape society and everyday life. It suits students who want to blend critical analysis of social structures with hands‑on media skills such as digital storytelling, social analytics and content production.

What you'll study

The programme integrates core modules in sociology with applied and theoretical approaches to digital media. In the early years you will build a foundation in sociological theory, methods (qualitative and quantitative) and contemporary social issues alongside introductory modules in digital media practices and digital cultures. Typical topics include social theory, research methods, digital society, media and communication, digital storytelling, and the sociology of everyday life.

In intermediate study you will take modules that deepen your understanding of areas such as social inequalities in digital contexts, online communities, media industries, data and society, and media production skills (audio, video, web and social media). You will also develop competence in research design, data collection and analysis, and critical evaluation of digital platforms and algorithms.

In your final year you will choose from advanced option modules and complete a substantial independent dissertation or applied project that brings together sociological inquiry and digital media practice. Typical final-year options cover subjects such as digital research methods, media ethics, policy and regulation, visual sociology, participatory media and a major project in digital content, data analysis or community engagement.

  • Core sociology topics: classical and contemporary theory, inequality, family and community, social policy, quantitative and qualitative methods.
  • Digital media topics: digital cultures, social media analysis, content creation, web and UX fundamentals, media industries and digital marketing concepts.
  • Research skills: surveys, interviews, ethnography, content analysis, basic data visualisation and critical use of digital tools.
  • Major project/dissertation: an independent research project or practice-based portfolio combining sociological enquiry with digital media outputs.

Entry requirements

Applicants are usually expected to hold a recognised secondary school qualification appropriate for undergraduate study. Typical offers consider successful completion of A-levels, BTEC qualifications, the International Baccalaureate or equivalent. Keele welcomes applicants from a wide range of academic backgrounds; relevant subjects include sociology, media studies, psychology, English, computing or social sciences, but there is no strict subject requirement for all cases.

Applicants whose first language is not English will need to demonstrate proficiency in English through an accepted qualification. Mature students and those with vocational or non‑traditional qualifications are encouraged to apply; some applicants may be invited for interview or to submit a short piece of written work or portfolio depending on their background.

Graduates combine analytical understanding of social processes with practical media skills, making them suitable for a wide range of roles. Common career paths include social research and policy work, digital and social media management, content production, community engagement, market research, public relations, communications and user experience research. The degree also provides a strong foundation for postgraduate study in sociology, media studies, social research methods or related professional qualifications.
