FieldGame Design

The BA (Hons) Game Design at the University of Hull teaches the creative, technical and production skills needed to design engaging interactive experiences across platforms. It suits students who are passionate about games and storytelling, enjoy iterative prototyping and want a practical, project-based course that culminates in a substantial final portfolio or major project.

What you'll study

This programme combines creative design, critical theory and practical production. You will study core design principles such as game mechanics, level design, player experience and narrative design alongside applied skills in prototyping, 2D/3D art, sound design and scripting for interactive systems. Modules are project-led and emphasise teamwork, iterative development and reflection.

  • Year 1 (Foundations) — introduction to game design theory, basic digital art and animation, introductory programming/scripting for designers, games history and analysis, and collaborative prototyping projects to build an initial portfolio.
  • Year 2 (Development) — deeper study of level and systems design, user experience and accessibility in games, intermediate tools for 3D modelling and texturing, audio for games, and larger team projects simulating production pipelines.
  • Final year (Honours project) — a substantial individual or team major project where you conceive, design and deliver a publishable prototype or playable experience, supported by modules on production management, entrepreneurship and industry practice. You will also complete a reflective dissertation or critical commentary linking practice with theory.

Throughout the degree you will use industry-standard engines and tools, learn version control and iterative testing practices, and be encouraged to specialise in areas such as level design, narrative, systems design or art while maintaining a broad understanding of production workflows.

Entry requirements

Applicants typically need a completed secondary education qualification such as A-levels or a relevant BTEC National Diploma. The programme is suited to applicants with evidence of creative practice or interest in games — this can be demonstrated through a small portfolio of work, game prototypes, modding examples, concept art, or related projects. Some applicants may be invited to an interview or asked to discuss their portfolio.

  • Typical academic background: A-levels, BTEC or equivalent; specific subject requirements are not usually strict but a creative, design or computing-related subject is beneficial.
  • Portfolio: a selection of recent work that demonstrates creative potential, practical skills or game-related projects is highly recommended.
  • GCSEs: usual university entry expectations for mathematics and English language apply; applicants without standard GCSE grades may be assessed on alternative qualifications or experience.
  • International students: English language proficiency is required; evidence through recognised qualifications or an approved English test is necessary if prior education was not in English.

Career prospects

Graduates leave with a practical portfolio and the transferable skills needed for roles across the games and interactive media industries. Common career paths include game designer, level or systems designer, narrative designer, user experience (UX) designer for games, technical designer, QA and playtester, and producer or project coordinator for small studios.

Skills gained on the course — teamwork, project management, prototyping, communication and applied technical skills — are also valued in adjacent sectors such as VR/AR content creation, educational games, serious games, simulation, digital media and interactive installations. The course supports portfolio development and industry-facing projects to improve employability and freelance opportunities.
