What you'll study

The programme combines applied analytical methods with policy and management theory to prepare students to work across public, private and third-sector health settings. Teaching typically covers health policy analysis, health economics, health systems and governance, quantitative data analysis and evaluation methods, and strategic management of health services. Many students complete a substantial independent research project or dissertation which applies methods learned to a policy or management question, and there is often an option to undertake an applied project with an external partner.

• Core themes: health policy development and appraisal, comparative health systems, health financing and economics, governance and regulation.
• Analytical methods: statistics for health, econometric approaches to policy evaluation, health data analytics and modelling, qualitative methods in health research.
• Management and leadership: strategic management in healthcare, service improvement, project and change management, ethics and organisational behaviour.
• Research project: an independent dissertation or applied project that integrates policy analysis, managerial insight and empirical evidence.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold an undergraduate degree in a relevant subject such as health sciences, social sciences, economics, public policy, business or a related discipline. Candidates with professional experience in health services, public health or policy roles may also be considered. You will need to demonstrate numeracy and an ability to engage with quantitative methods as part of the application.

International applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English through an accepted test or equivalent qualification. Additional requirements such as references, a personal statement and, for some applicants, an interview or evidence of relevant work experience may be requested.
