What you'll study

The programme integrates core criminological theory and methods with modules from international relations and global politics. Across the course you will explore how crime is defined and controlled in different contexts, the causes and consequences of offending, and how international actors respond to transnational crime, human rights abuses and conflict.

• Year 1 / Foundations – introductory modules in criminology and international relations, basics of criminal justice systems, introduction to social science research methods, and a module on law and society or policing which builds a common conceptual base.
• Year 2 / Developing knowledge – more advanced theories of crime and justice, comparative politics and international security, quantitative and qualitative research techniques, and optional modules such as terrorism and political violence, cybercrime, drug policy, human rights, or migration.
• Final year / Specialisation and independent study – a substantial independent dissertation or research project, alongside advanced options that might include global governance, international criminal law, restorative justice, and a capstone module applying theory to practice. Many students also have the opportunity to undertake a work placement or an international exchange depending on availability and eligibility.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to have completed secondary education equivalent to UK A-levels, Scottish Highers or an international qualification recognised by UK universities. Typical candidates will have a combination of academic and/or vocational qualifications showing the ability to study at undergraduate degree level. Admissions also consider personal statements, references and any relevant experience.

International applicants must meet English language proficiency requirements through an accepted academic English test or equivalent evidence of prior study in English. Mature applicants and those with relevant work or voluntary experience in criminal justice or community organisations are welcome to apply and are considered on an individual basis.
