What you'll study

This single‑honours BA brings together core strands from politics, international relations and political philosophy. In early years you study foundational modules such as political theory, British and comparative politics, international relations theory, and research methods. In later years you choose from advanced options that typically include global governance, security studies, international organisations, diplomacy, public policy, political economy, and contemporary political thought.

Teaching mixes lectures, seminars, workshops and small‑group tutorials, with assessment by essays, policy briefs, presentations and a supervised dissertation or major research project in your final year. There are opportunities to take modules in related disciplines such as law, economics or languages, and to undertake a work placement or a period of study abroad through the university's exchange arrangements.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to have strong secondary‑level qualifications equivalent to standard UK university entry (A‑levels, BTEC, Scottish Highers, International Baccalaureate or other recognised national qualifications). Successful applicants normally demonstrate evidence of sustained academic achievement, strong written communication skills, and an interest in public affairs or global issues.

The department accepts a range of qualifications and experience, including mature students and graduates of other disciplines. Applicants whose first language is not English will need to show an approved English language qualification or other evidence of proficiency as set out by the university.

Graduates go on to careers in central and local government, diplomacy and international organisations, policy and research roles in think tanks and NGOs, media and journalism, political campaigning, and public affairs and consultancy. The degree also provides a solid foundation for further study, including postgraduate masters programmes and doctoral research, or professional conversion courses such as law.
