What you'll study

This degree brings together microeconomics, macroeconomics and applied finance across a programme designed to build quantitative and conceptual skills. In early years you will normally study introductory microeconomics and macroeconomics, mathematics and statistics for economists, and basic financial concepts such as corporate finance and financial markets. As you progress, typical modules cover econometrics and data analysis, financial institutions and banking, investment theory and portfolio management, corporate finance theory, and modules on risk and derivatives. Optional or elective modules often include behavioural economics, public economics, international finance, development economics and financial regulation.

Teaching is delivered through lectures, seminars and practical computing sessions that focus on data handling and empirical work. You will learn to use statistical software and apply econometric techniques to real datasets. Assessment methods typically include essays, problem sets, data-based projects and examinations. Many students have the opportunity to take optional placement or study-abroad routes where available, or to take a final-year dissertation or applied research project to develop independent analytical skills.

Entry requirements

Entry is competitive and applicants are expected to demonstrate strong numeracy. Typical applicants will hold A-levels (or equivalent) with good grades including mathematics or further mathematics, or an appropriate maths-based qualification at the equivalent level. Alternative qualifications such as BTEC, Irish Leaving Certificate, Scottish Highers, or international school-leaving credentials are considered if they demonstrate quantitative ability. Mature applicants with relevant experience are welcome and should provide evidence of their numeracy and academic readiness.

International students must meet the University's English language requirements; specific test scores and any additional documentation are set out by the university admissions pages. Applicants whose first language is not English may need to provide an English language qualification.
