What you'll study

The programme combines academic modules with assessed clinical placements across a range of maternity settings. Core areas of study include the biological and behavioural sciences that underpin midwifery practice, antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care, public health and safeguarding in the perinatal period, and the management of complex maternal and neonatal conditions. Research methods and evidence-based practice inform the curriculum throughout, with an applied research project or dissertation component at master’s level for those taking the MSc award.

Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, skills laboratories and simulation, blended learning resources and supervised practice placements. Clinical learning takes place with partner NHS trusts and community services, enabling experience in hospital labour wards, birthing centres, antenatal and postnatal clinics, and community/home settings. Assessment is through written assignments, clinical competency sign-off, practical examinations and a research dissertation or equivalent for MSc students.

Entry requirements

Applicants are typically expected to hold an undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification; degrees in health, life or social sciences are relevant, and applicants with other degrees plus appropriate occupational experience may be considered. Prior clinical experience in health or social care and demonstrable commitment to midwifery are advantageous. Applicants must meet professional and statutory requirements for practice, which include satisfactory criminal record checks, occupational health clearance and immunisation status, and an ability to meet programme attendance and placement commitments.

International applicants should demonstrate proficiency in English in line with professional regulatory expectations. Selection includes academic screening and an interview or selection event to assess suitability for midwifery practice, communication skills and professional values.

Career prospects

On successful completion of the programme and meeting the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (or relevant regulatory body), graduates are eligible to apply for registration as a midwife and to begin practice in the NHS or private and voluntary maternity services. Common early-career roles include community midwife, labour ward midwife and roles in antenatal/postnatal services.

With experience, midwives can progress to specialist and advanced clinical roles (for example, team lead, specialist community midwife, or advanced practitioner), education and training posts, research positions, public health roles or leadership and management within maternity services. The programme also provides a foundation for further postgraduate study in specialist or research-focused pathways.
