What you'll study

This programme begins with a broad first year covering the core concepts and practical skills used across modern biology, allowing you to make an informed decision about your specialism at the end of Year 1. Typical topics studied in the early stages include cell and molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, physiology, ecology and microbiology, together with essential laboratory techniques and statistics.

In Years 2 and 3 you choose a pathway or modules that reflect your interests: possible areas include molecular and cellular biology, genetics and genomics, microbiology and infection, ecology and conservation, animal physiology and developmental biology. Independent research and project work are important components of the later years; you usually complete an extended laboratory or field-based research project or dissertation supervised by academic staff. Practical classes, field courses, data analysis and research methods are integrated throughout to build technical competence and scientific reasoning.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to have a science-based background. Typical offers require A-levels (or equivalent) including Biology or another science; Mathematics is strongly recommended. Exact offers vary by year and by applicants' qualifications, and the deferred choice option is designed for those who prefer to postpone selection of a specific path until after the first year. Swansea University also accepts BTEC, International Baccalaureate and a range of international qualifications; mature students and those with relevant experiential backgrounds are considered on an individual basis.
