What you'll study

This honours degree covers the theory and practice of early childhood from multiple perspectives: developmental psychology, play and curriculum, safeguarding, inclusion and working with families. Modules blend academic study with practical application and include child development across the early years, observation and assessment, the role of play in learning, inclusive practice and supporting children with additional needs, safeguarding and welfare, and leadership and management in early years settings.

Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, workshops and extensive professional placements in nurseries, childminding and children’s centres. You build a professional portfolio through assessed practice, reflective logs and observed practice placements. Entry requirements

Essential background expectations include GCSE (or equivalent) passes in English and maths at a standard equivalent to grade 4/C, and evidence of recent experience working with young children is highly recommended. Successful applicants must complete an enhanced DBS check, provide occupational health clearance where required, and be able to meet professional placement requirements (for example, vaccination checks and fitness to practise declarations).
