What you'll study

The programme combines core engineering fundamentals with specialist topics in electrical and electronic engineering. In early stages you study mathematics for engineers, circuit theory, analogue and digital electronics, signals and systems, programming and practical laboratory skills to build a strong foundation.

As you progress you cover subjects such as power systems and power electronics, control and instrumentation, embedded and real-time systems, communications and networking, electronic design and PCB development, sensors and measurement, and renewable energy technologies. Project work is an integral part of the degree, including team design projects and an individual honours project (or an extended research/design project on the MEng).

The course emphasises practical learning through laboratory work, simulation and software tools used in industry, plus opportunities for industrial visits, guest lectures and professional skills modules covering project management, engineering ethics and professional practice.

  • Year 1: core engineering mathematics, basic circuit and electronic principles, programming and laboratory skills.
  • Intermediate years: digital systems, analogue electronics, control theory, power engineering, signal processing and embedded systems.
  • Final year (BEng): individual honours project, advanced modules in a chosen specialist area.
  • Integrated MEng route: additional advanced design/research modules and an extended project to meet the higher level of learning expected for Chartered Engineer status.

Entry requirements

Typical applicants will hold A-levels (or equivalent) with good grades in mathematics and usually a science such as physics. Relevant Level 3 qualifications (for example a BTEC Extended Diploma in an engineering subject) are also considered when combined with a strong mathematics qualification. Mature applicants with practical experience or alternative qualifications are welcome; admissions tutors consider the overall profile, including references and personal statements.

Typical academic expectations include strong achievement in mathematics plus evidence of ability in analytical subjects. GCSE passes in English and mathematics at a standard equivalent to grade 4/C are normally required. Applicants who do not meet direct entry criteria may be offered an alternative entry route or a foundation year where available.
