What you'll study

This MA combines advanced study of theoretical perspectives on childhood with practical investigation of practice, policy and leadership in early years settings. You will explore how children develop, learn and are understood in different contexts, and learn to apply research methods to problems in early childhood education.

• Theories of Childhood — historical and contemporary frameworks for understanding childhood, development and pedagogy.
• Early Years Curriculum and Pedagogy — approaches to planning, assessment and inclusive practice for children from birth to statutory school age.
• Policy, Governance and Quality in Early Childhood — analysis of national and international policy, regulation and quality assurance in early years provision.
• Research Methods and Evidence-based Practice — qualitative and quantitative approaches, ethics, and translating evidence into practice.
• Leadership and Professional Enquiry — change management, reflective practice, workforce development and leading improvement in early years settings.
• Independent Dissertation or Major Project — an extended piece of research or practice-based project addressing a chosen issue in early childhood and education.

Modules are typically delivered through seminars, workshops, practitioner-focused assignments and research supervision. The programme emphasises critical reflection, practitioner enquiry and the application of research to improve outcomes for young children.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a recognised undergraduate degree in education, childhood studies, psychology or a related discipline. Consideration is given to applicants with a good honours degree from a different field who can demonstrate substantial relevant professional experience in early years settings.

• Academic requirement: an undergraduate degree at a level equivalent to a UK honours degree (exact classification considered on application).
• Professional experience: evidence of recent experience working with young children (for example in nurseries, childminding, reception classes or similar settings) is strongly desirable and may be required for practice-related elements.
• References: at least one professional or academic reference supporting suitability for postgraduate study and practice-based work.
• English language: non-native English speakers will need to meet the university's English language requirements.
• Interview or written statement: some applicants may be asked to attend an interview or provide a personal statement outlining their professional aims and reasons for study.
