What you'll study

The programme combines theoretical perspectives on career development with practical approaches to career education, employability and labour market engagement. Core themes include career theories and development across the life course; curriculum design for career learning; research methods for practice; and the use of labour market information (LMI) to inform interventions.

• Career theory and practice: models of career development, identity, transitions and decision-making, with attention to diversity, inclusion and social justice.
• Curriculum and pedagogy for career education: planning and delivering career programmes in schools, colleges and higher education, employer engagement and work-related learning.
• Labour market information and careers intelligence: interpreting LMI, local and national labour market dynamics, and translating data into practice.
• Research methods and evidence-informed practice: qualitative and quantitative methods, programme evaluation, and using research to develop and assess career interventions.
• Professional practice and placement: opportunities for workplace learning, consultancy projects with institutions or employers, and skills for career guidance interviews and group work.
• Dissertation or major project: an independent research or practice-focused project that applies theory and methods to a real-world career education issue.

Teaching typically involves seminars, workshops, practitioner-led sessions, supervised research supervision and assessed portfolios. Assessment methods include essays, project reports, presentations, case-study portfolios and a final dissertation or applied project.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good undergraduate degree (equivalent to a UK upper second-class honours) in a relevant discipline such as education, psychology, sociology, social policy, business or a related field. Applicants with substantial professional experience in careers work, education, youth services, HR or related fields may also be considered, including those who can demonstrate relevant prior learning and professional practice.

Successful applicants will usually be able to demonstrate evidence of reflective practice, commitment to work with learners or clients, and the potential to undertake independent research. International applicants must meet the University's English language requirements; typical postgraduate offers request a recognised English language qualification with scores demonstrating competence for academic study.
