What you'll study

This BSc brings together core accounting disciplines and finance subjects to build technical competence and analytical judgement. In early years you study fundamentals such as financial accounting, management accounting, introduction to finance, business law and quantitative methods. Progressing through the programme you cover corporate reporting, auditing, taxation, corporate finance, financial markets and instruments, and modules on risk management and financial statement analysis.

Teaching typically includes lectures, seminars, case studies and computer-based workshops using industry-standard software and data. Assessment is by a mix of exams, coursework, group projects and practical assignments. Many students undertake a substantial independent project or dissertation in their final year, and there is usually an option to take a year in industry or a study-abroad year to gain practical experience or international perspective.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to have strong academic qualifications in relevant secondary-school level examinations or equivalent international qualifications. Successful candidates typically demonstrate competence in numeracy; A-level mathematics (or an equivalent quantitative qualification) is often preferred or recommended but not always mandatory. City also considers a combination of qualifications including BTECs, international baccalaureate, and recognised overseas credentials, together with satisfactory references and a personal statement.

Applicants whose first language is not English will normally need to meet English language requirements through an approved test or recognised equivalent. Mature applicants and applicants with relevant work experience are considered on an individual basis.

Career prospects

Graduates go on to a wide range of careers across accountancy and finance. Common destinations include trainee roles with professional accountancy firms, audit and assurance, tax advisory, management accounting, corporate finance, financial analysis, investment management, and roles within banking and corporate treasury. The degree also provides a strong foundation for specialist postgraduate study or professional qualifications.

The programme is designed to align with the requirements of major professional bodies; graduates frequently progress to or receive exemptions towards qualifications such as ACCA, ICAEW or CIMA depending on the modules taken and external accreditation at the time of study.
