What you'll study

The programme provides advanced academic and applied study across clinical, psychosocial and organisational aspects of dementia. Core themes include the biology and diagnosis of dementias, person-centred and psychosocial approaches to care, advanced assessment and communication, and the lived experience of people with dementia and their families.

• Core modules typically cover: foundations of dementia studies, evidence-based practice and research methods, advanced care planning and ethics, and leadership and service development in dementia care.
• Specialist modules explore topics such as behaviour that challenges, end of life care in dementia, cognition and neuropsychology, cultural considerations and dementia in diverse populations, and interventions to promote wellbeing and engagement.
• Research project / dissertation enables you to design and complete an original piece of applied research or service evaluation relevant to dementia practice or policy.
• The programme is delivered through a combination of taught modules, case-based learning and applied assignments; flexible delivery options often include part-time and blended or distance-learning routes to accommodate working professionals.

Entry requirements

Applicants normally need a good honours degree in a relevant discipline (for example health, social care, psychology or related subjects). Applicants with substantial, recent professional experience in dementia care or related roles may be considered without a traditional degree, particularly when supported by professional references and a portfolio of relevant practice.

International applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English through an approved qualification or test unless exempt. Applicants will usually be expected to provide a referee (employer or academic) and a personal statement outlining their experience, development needs and proposed use of the award.
