What you'll study

The programme combines taught modules on cognitive theory with practical training in neuroscientific methods and quantitative analysis. Core topics typically include cognitive neuropsychology, perception and attention, memory systems, decision-making, and the neural basis of cognition. Practical modules emphasise experimental design, statistics, programming for cognitive neuroscience (commonly using languages such as Python or MATLAB), and hands-on experience with methods such as EEG and behavioural paradigms; where available, access to neuroimaging facilities and analysis toolkits is provided.

The course is structured around taught classes, laboratory practicums and a substantial independent research project or dissertation supervised by academic staff. Assessment methods commonly include coursework, lab reports, presentations, exams and the research dissertation, which allows you to develop a specialised empirical study or analysis pipeline.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold an undergraduate degree in psychology, neuroscience, biological sciences or a closely related subject. A 2:1 honours degree is commonly preferred, though applicants with a lower second-class degree plus relevant research experience or professional practice may be considered. Applicants without a psychology background may be expected to demonstrate competence in basic statistics and experimental methods.
