What you'll study

The programme builds from core foundations in the natural and social sciences through to advanced, independent research at masters level. Early years focus on fundamental topics such as physical geography (processes in geomorphology, hydrology and climatology), human geography (urban and social processes), ecology, environmental chemistry and quantitative methods.

Practical skills are developed throughout the course: laboratory techniques, field methods, ecological survey, environmental monitoring and data handling are integrated with spatial technologies including GIS and remote sensing. As you progress you choose optional modules that reflect your interests — for example climate change impacts and adaptation, conservation and biodiversity management, environmental policy and governance, environmental assessment and sustainability appraisal, environmental modelling, and applied GIS for environmental decision-making.

The integrated masters element means the final year includes advanced taught modules and a substantial research project or dissertation at masters level. That project is typically student-led, supervised by academic staff, and can draw on Keele’s laboratory facilities, field sites and industry or public-sector links.

Entry requirements

Successful applicants typically demonstrate strong performance in relevant A-levels (science, geography or quantitative subjects) or equivalent qualifications from other systems. Admissions look for evidence of numeracy and scientific understanding; candidates with combinations of geography, biology, environmental science, chemistry, physics, maths or related subjects are well placed. Applicants without direct subject background but with appropriate alternative qualifications or relevant experience may be considered.

International applicants must meet English language requirements. Selection also takes into account references, personal statement and, where applicable, relevant work or voluntary experience that demonstrates commitment to the field.
