This integrated masters in Chemistry with Medicinal Chemistry combines a broad grounding in core chemical sciences with specialist training in the principles and practice of drug discovery and development. It suits students who want a vocationally relevant chemistry degree that prepares them for careers in pharmaceutical and biotech R&D or for further research at doctoral level.

What you'll study

The programme builds a strong foundation in inorganic, organic and physical chemistry in the early years before introducing specialist medicinal chemistry modules. Typical topics include synthetic organic chemistry, spectroscopy and structural characterisation, physical chemistry and thermodynamics, analytical techniques (chromatography, mass spectrometry, NMR), and computational chemistry. Medicinal chemistry-specific content covers drug design and optimisation, structure–activity relationships (SAR), pharmacokinetics and ADME, molecular pharmacology, prodrug strategies, and safety/toxicology considerations.

Teaching uses lectures, small-group tutorials and extensive practical laboratory work to develop synthetic and analytical skills. Later years emphasise project work and independent research: you will normally complete a substantial research dissertation or lab-based research project in a medicinal chemistry context, which may be laboratory- or literature/computational-based. Optional modules or work placements (where available) allow you to pursue topics such as industrial process chemistry, formulation, or advanced spectroscopy. Assessment is a mix of practical reports, written exams, coursework and project dissertations.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to have A-levels (or equivalent) including Chemistry; typical offers are in line with strong performance in relevant science subjects. Many successful applicants also hold a second science or maths A-level. International qualifications such as the International Baccalaureate, European Leaving Certificates and vocational qualifications are considered on an equivalent basis. Admission decisions also take account of personal statements, references and any relevant laboratory or work experience. Mature students and applicants with non-traditional qualifications are encouraged to contact admissions for guidance on appropriate preparation and evidence of ability to undertake an integrated masters.
