What you'll study

The programme combines biological and social science foundations with professional midwifery practice. You will study anatomy and physiology relevant to pregnancy and childbirth, pharmacology for midwives, antenatal and postnatal care, intrapartum care including normal labour and care of complications, newborn assessment and neonatal support, and public health and safeguarding in the perinatal period.

Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, small-group tutorials, simulation-based training and extensive supervised clinical practice in a variety of settings. Practical learning takes place across antenatal clinics, labour wards, postnatal wards, community midwifery teams, homebirth services and neonatal units.

Research and evidence-based practice are embedded throughout the programme. You will study research methods, critical appraisal, professional and legal frameworks, and leadership and quality improvement in maternity services. The programme typically includes a substantial project or dissertation and practice assessment at each stage to meet professional competencies required for registration.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a secondary education qualification equivalent to UK A-levels or a recognised access qualification. Typical offers focus on achievement in health or science-related subjects, although other disciplines are considered where evidence of relevant skills and motivation is shown. Level 3 BTEC qualifications in health and social care or related subjects are usually accepted.

Good GCSE standard (or equivalent) in English language, mathematics and a science subject is normally expected. Applicants must meet professional suitability checks including an enhanced DBS (criminal records) check, occupational health screening and immunisation requirements. Entry also typically involves an interview and may include numeracy and literacy assessments and evidence of recent experience or exposure to maternity/healthcare settings.

Career prospects

Graduates are eligible to apply for registration as midwives with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, enabling practice in NHS and private maternity services. Newly qualified midwives commonly take posts in hospital labour wards, community midwifery teams and alongside homebirth services. Career progression can include roles in specialist clinical practice, community public health, neonatal care, and leadership positions such as team lead or service manager.

Many graduates go on to further study and professional development: options include specialist modules (for example perinatal mental health or neonatal care), master's level qualifications, midwifery education and research degrees, or advanced clinical practice training. Other career pathways include policy, commissioning, non-governmental organisations working in maternal and newborn health, and academic or teaching roles.
