What you'll study

This programme combines advanced coursework and supervised research to give students a strong grounding in the science and management of domestic and companion animals. Core topics typically include animal physiology, nutrition, genetics and breeding, animal health and pathology, reproductive biology, and principles of livestock production. Students also study research methods and experimental design, animal welfare and behaviour, and contemporary topics such as sustainable production systems and biotechnology applications in animal science.

Teaching is delivered through lectures, laboratory practicals, field visits and seminars. A substantial component of the degree is an independent research thesis or project conducted under faculty supervision; students may work on projects spanning basic biological research to applied production and industry-relevant trials. Elective modules and seminars allow specialisation in areas such as monogastric or ruminant nutrition, aquaculture, companion animal science, or molecular approaches to breeding and disease.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally required to hold a recognised bachelor’s degree in animal science, agriculture, biology, veterinary technology or a closely related discipline. Academic performance at undergraduate level is assessed as part of the selection process, and relevant practical experience in laboratory or farm settings is an advantage. Candidates are usually asked to provide academic transcripts, a statement of purpose, and letters of recommendation.

International applicants must demonstrate proficiency in the language of instruction; Tunghai University may require proof of Chinese or English ability depending on the medium of teaching for specific supervisors or courses.
