What you'll study

Coursework emphasizes practical teaching competencies and inclusive practice. Topics explicitly highlighted in the program include child and adolescent development and learning; classroom management and creating positive learning environments; designing engaging lessons in areas such as STEM, social studies, and history; and understanding how culture, language, family background, and disabilities shape students’ school experiences. The program also incorporates Teachers for Tomorrow I and II, which can earn up to seven undergraduate credits.

Entry requirements

Applicants should be in good academic standing and typically present a high school or transfer GPA of 3.0. Admission to the accelerated pathway requires submission of a Statement of Intent essay addressing motivation for an accelerated, applied degree and readiness for practical, career-oriented learning, plus a letter of recommendation from a current or former teacher describing suitability for the program.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for roles inside and beyond traditional classrooms. Named career pathways in program materials include curriculum developer, educational consultant, instructional coordinator, education policy analyst, community education coordinator, nonprofit educational program manager, and learning and development specialist. Students planning to teach or take leadership posts may use the accelerated MEd pathway to meet teacher licensure requirements in four years.

Scholarships & funding angle (general)

The abridged format is promoted as a cost-saving route by allowing students to finish one year earlier and reduce one year’s tuition, room, and board; program materials note that completing the MaxImpact pathway may save approximately $87,750 in combined education and early-career benefit estimates. The 3+1 option also enables students to add a year of graduate study to obtain a master’s and potentially bypass an entry-level stage.
