What you'll study

The program combines theory and application to build assessment, diagnostic and instructional skills in reading and writing. Topics covered include the science of reading and its classroom application; curriculum design for diverse learners and those with literacy difficulties; adult learning theory for initiating literacy initiatives; 21st-century literacies and brain-based research. Courses and field experiences are structured to prepare students for contemporary reading specialist and literacy leadership roles.

Entry requirements

The program is delivered online with required field hours completed locally. Candidates who intend to pursue Pennsylvania Reading Specialist certification must hold a valid Pennsylvania Instructional I or II teaching certificate.

Career prospects

Graduates typically move into roles supporting reading and writing development across K–12 and adult settings. Common positions include Reading Specialist, Literacy Specialist, Literacy Coach, Adult Education Instructor, Literacy Curriculum Developer, Literacy Assessment Specialist, Education Writer, Writing Center Coordinator and Educational Consultant.
