What you'll study

Coursework focuses on educating for sustainability (EFS) themes and practical application in schools and organizations. Key emphases include:

• the three Es of EFS: environment, economy and equity;
• designing holistic, integrated curricula that embed sustainability across subjects and grade levels;
• using U.S. Partnership for Education for Sustainable Development guidelines in curriculum and practice;
• advocacy and project leadership to move schools or organizations toward sustainable practices;
• connecting EFS work to national and international professional networks.

Degree requirements: the MEd in Foundations of Education: Educating for Sustainability requires successful completion of 33 credits. The program can be completed in 5–7 semesters with typical enrollment of 3–6 credits per term and optional summer face-to-face classes. Optional summer residency sessions are scheduled during the first two full weeks of July following the Fourth of July week.

Entry requirements

To apply, submit an online application with essay questions and program-specific materials, a resume/CV, a non-refundable $50 application fee, and official transcripts from all postsecondary institutions. Two letters of recommendation are required from individuals who can evaluate your professional or academic work (not relatives). Selected applicants will interview with a faculty member in person, by phone, or via Skype. GRE or other standardized tests are not required. There are additional requirements for international applicants and for applicants without a bachelor’s degree. Application deadlines: Spring—December 1, Summer—April 15, Fall—August 1.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared to integrate sustainability into classrooms and school systems and to lead sustainability initiatives. Typical roles include K–12 teachers embedding EFS into daily instruction, curriculum specialists, sustainability coordinators, and educators in farm-to-school programs or environmental education centers. Alumni of the program are positioned to advocate for and manage projects that improve sustainability practices in schools and organizations and to align EFS curricula with existing learning standards.

Scholarships & funding angle (general)

Most Antioch University New England students use some form of financial aid; the university’s admissions and financial aid staff can advise on federal, state and private aid options. Tuition for the MEd for Experienced Educators is listed at $840 per credit for a 33-credit program. The program offers a 10% discount when three or more students from the same school or district enroll in AUNE Education MEd or Certificate programs together, subject to conditions.
