What you'll study

The curriculum emphasizes advanced nursing practice for individuals and families across the lifespan. Coursework and clinical experiences develop skills to manage acute and chronic conditions, formulate medical diagnoses, create treatment plans, prescribe medications, and order and interpret diagnostic tests. Teamwork, interdisciplinary collaboration, care coordination, health promotion, disease prevention, patient education, and community health initiatives are core elements. Clinical practicum placements total 760 hours and include primary care and specialty rotations, with an emphasis on serving medically underserved populations through HRSA-supported initiatives.

Entry requirements

• Apply online (no application fee required).
• Official transcripts from all degree-granting institutions.
• Personal essay describing academic objectives.
• Current resume or curriculum vitae.
• Two letters of recommendation (one must be from a supervisor addressing leadership potential and readiness for graduate work).
• No GRE or GMAT required.
• One year of clinical experience is required prior to beginning clinical rotations.
• Qualified applicants will be scheduled for an interview by the programme director.
• Start terms: Fall (hybrid and online) and Spring (online only).
• Post-MSN certification pathways and applicants with prior master’s work may require gap analysis or additional coursework to meet APRN requirements.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared to practice as Family Nurse Practitioners providing comprehensive care for patients of all ages, including diagnosis, treatment planning, prescribing, and health education. The programme readies students to sit for national certification (AANP or ANCC) and to assume roles supervising healthcare teams, participating in interdisciplinary care, and delivering services in underserved and rural settings. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects strong growth for nurse practitioners, driven by preventive care emphasis and needs of an aging population.

Scholarships & funding angle (general)

Carlow received a HRSA IMPACT grant to support placing FNP students in medically underserved areas and to offer specialty rotations in women’s and behavioral health. Current full‑time FNP students were eligible to apply for up to $23,000 in tuition reimbursement through that grant; the impact grant application is closed to new students.
