What you'll study

The program develops subject-matter breadth and data literacy, plus methods to support diverse learners and to integrate technology and research-based approaches into secondary mathematics teaching. Students study advanced mathematical concepts and pedagogy, learn to synthesize critical thinking and quantitative modeling skills with biblical perspectives, and gain familiarity with qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods research and professional dispositions.

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold a baccalaureate or graduate degree from an institution accredited by an ED- and CHEA-recognized agency, verified by official transcripts sent directly to IWU. Candidates need either a bachelor’s degree with a Mathematics major or state certification to teach secondary mathematics. An undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or higher is required from the baccalaureate institution where at least 30 credit hours were completed.

• A valid (not necessarily current) state teaching license endorsed for secondary mathematics, or a valid temporary/standard/professional teaching license/certificate from another recognized accreditation body, or an official letter from a school administrator confirming employment as a teacher of record.
• At least one year of teaching experience in an approved public, private, or parochial P–12 school (U.S. or abroad).
• Supporting documentation that demonstrates access to a P–12 classroom, preferably in mathematics.

Graduation requirements include successful completion of the M.S. curriculum, a cumulative graduate GPA of 3.0 or above, a minimum grade of B- in each course, completion of admission, mid-program review, and program completion gateways, and payment of all tuition and fees.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared to teach advanced placement, dual-enrollment, or early-college mathematics courses in P–12 settings and to serve as adjunct community college mathematics instructors. Other roles noted include mathematics specialist positions in education service agencies and mathematics-related positions across various industries. The degree is intended to deepen classroom practice and content knowledge rather than provide licensure.
