What you'll study

• Core methodologies: theories and methods in religious studies, workshops in research design, qualitative and quantitative approaches to religion, and critical theory.
• Historical and textual courses: historical development of major religious traditions, courses on scriptural and classical texts (for example, biblical studies, Qur’anic studies, Sanskrit and Pali texts, East Asian canonical writings).
• Regional and comparative studies: South Asian religions, East Asian religions, African and Indigenous religious traditions, and comparative religion/ interreligious encounter.
• Thematic electives: religion and ethics, religion and politics, ritual and material religion, gender and sexuality in religion, religion and law, religion and the arts, and contemporary religious movements.
• Research training and language study: instruction in research languages and methods appropriate to students’ specialisations (ancient or modern languages, archival skills, digital humanities approaches to religion).
• Thesis or capstone: most students complete a supervised research thesis or a substantial capstone project that demonstrates mastery of a chosen topic.

Entry requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a strong academic record in the humanities, social sciences or a related field.
• Academic transcripts and two or more letters of recommendation, preferably from faculty who can assess scholarly potential.
• A personal statement outlining academic interests, research questions and how the MA fits career or further study plans.
• A writing sample that demonstrates ability to conduct close reading, construct an argument and engage with secondary literature; some applicants may be invited to interview.
• Competence in relevant research languages is an advantage and may be required for certain specialisms; specific preparatory expectations are discussed with admitted students.
