What you'll study

This diploma builds foundational knowledge and practical skills across the emergency management continuum. The program combines applied classroom learning with scenario-based exercises and workplace-relevant projects.

• Emergency management principles — frameworks for disaster risk reduction, mitigation strategies and the four phases of emergency management: prevention, preparedness, response and recovery.
• Incident response and coordination — incident management systems, multi-agency coordination, roles and responsibilities, and basic incident control techniques.
• Risk assessment and planning — hazard identification, risk analysis, emergency planning, evacuation planning and development of response plans.
• Community engagement and recovery — community preparedness programs, social vulnerability, recovery planning and supporting affected communities post-incident.
• Workplace health and safety and legal context — relevant legislation, duty of care, occupational health and safety in emergency contexts and legal/ethical considerations.
• Communications and media — public information, emergency warnings, stakeholder communication and use of digital platforms in crisis situations.
• Leadership and operational management — team leadership in emergency settings, resource management, decision making under pressure and incident debrief and continuous improvement.
• Practical exercises and assessment — table-top simulations, field exercises, development of an emergency management plan and workplace-based assessments where relevant.

Entry requirements

Applicants typically need one of the following:

• completion of secondary schooling equivalent to Year 12; or
• a relevant certificate (for example a Certificate IV in a related field) or vocational experience in emergency services, local government, health or related sectors; or
• mature-age entry on the basis of work experience and demonstrated capability in a related role.

All applicants should have sound English language, literacy and numeracy skills. Certain practical activities may require a current first aid qualification, immunisation evidence or a police check depending on placement arrangements; these are specified before enrolment where applicable.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for operational and support roles across the emergency management sector. Typical career outcomes include:

• emergency management officer or coordinator in local, state/territory or national agencies
• incident support officer or operations support in fire, ambulance, SES and other services
• community recovery coordinator or resilience officer in local government or NGOs
• business continuity and disaster preparedness officer in private and public organisations
• roles in emergency planning, risk assessment and stakeholder engagement for infrastructure, utilities and critical services.

The diploma also provides pathway opportunities into higher-level study in emergency management, disaster and resilience studies or related bachelor degrees, often with credit for completed units.
